Highschool Kicks Out Marine For Wearing His Uniform In Graduation, But He Gets The Last Laugh

Outed

Jacob swelled with pride with his mother and girlfriend beside him on what was supposed to be one of the most significant days of his life. But the principal paused when it was his turn to go up. Picking out Jacob in the crowd, he smugly shot a look at him… And then he moved on to the list’s next name. But when everyone learned why Jacob had been nixed by the principal at his own graduation ceremony, they were outraged.

His Dreams

Jacob Dalton Stanley was a Crown Point High School student from Crown Point, Indiana. He had wanted to serve his country since he was a boy and dreamed of one day becoming a sergeant. He expressed his interest in joining the U.S. The military when he was only 10 years old. He wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps, but no one expected it to come from him.

His Dreams

His Dreams

Pursuing His Dream

Jacob worked on his studies diligently and completed his high school requirements months in advance so that he could pursue his dream. He promptly enlisted in the Marines when he had completed his studies. Right in time to fly back to Indiana to attend his high school graduation ceremony, he finished boot camp. Little did he know, it wouldn’t go exactly the way he imagined it.

A Proud Mother

Shannon, a high school sweetheart of Jacob’s, was waiting for him. She and Kathy, his mother, were ecstatic to have him back home. And his mother couldn’t have been prouder when he showed them his Marine Corps uniform. In just a few months, she was in awe of what her son had accomplished. And he was about to receive his high school diploma as the cherry on top.

A Memorable Day

Kathy, Jacob, and Shannon were all thrilled as they made their way to Jacob’s high school, knowing that Jacob’s hard work had finally paid off. Jacob was excited to be presented in front of his friends and family with his diploma — he had earned it. All his life lay in front of him. Nothing can take this away from him, he thought.

The Students Were Excited

With congratulations and salutes from friends and teachers, Jacob was greeted. When students and their parents flooded the stands in their gowns and caps, the excitement in the air was palpable. But it was the response to what Jacob decided to wear to the ceremony that would push things too far for some.

Calling Out The Names

Crown Point High School’s principal, Chip Pettit, took the stage and tapped his mic. He began his opening speech to a sea of excited young faces by fumbling through his notes. Then, in alphabetical order, he started calling out names. But it wouldn’t take long for both the students and parents to recoil in shock.

Kathy squeezed Jacob’s hand when Mr. Pettit hit the S’s, and beamed up at him. He took a last glance, before it was fine, at the acceptance speech he had written and practiced. Stepping forward, he got ready to step up to the platform. But just as Mr. Pettit had reached the list with his last name, he stopped.

His Name Wasn’t Called

Mr. Pettit’s eyes met him, looking for and pointing out Jacob in the crowd, and he smugly gave him a glance. Then, without reading Jacob’s name, he went on to the next name on the list. For a moment, Jacob’s face fell in shock and the crowd went silent. This was definitely a mistake? Why was it that Jacob’s name was omitted?

His Name Wasn't Called

He Was Singled Out

Jacob’s face fell. That very afternoon, he realized he had defied the principal, but he had never expected Mr. Pettit to publicly humiliate him like this. He had just been standing up for his rights the way he saw it. Why was it that his school had such a problem with what he wore? And why was he singled out like this?

Feeling Blue

After his life was put on the line to serve his country, the school decided to treat him like this. Was this right? And what infuriated Kathy the most was that she looked around and found that other students were also breaking the dress code for graduation. And yet, their names were always called out. Did he have a problem with Mr. Pettit’s son?

They Were Outraged

Kathy later said in an interview, “It was a disgrace. There was one student who wore shorts and gym shoes, and another student who wore a red turban symbolizing his religious views.” At the ceremony, Jacob turned up wearing his full blue Marine Corps dress uniform. But, to be honest, there was nothing in the bylaws of Crown Point Community School Corp. that addressed whether at graduation U.S. military uniforms could be worn. Everyone was indignant. But nobody expected the tale of Jacob to hit high places like that.

Absolutely Ridiculous

Leann Tustison, Jacob’s friend, said that the situation was “absolutely ridiculous.” She went on to say “He’s in the military putting his life on the line for us. It’s unacceptable that he was not allowed to walk across the stage.” “The students were outraged,” she added. “There were some students who were going to walk in solidarity with Jake.” However, the backlash didn’t just stop there.

The Backlash

Christal Hernandez heard about the story and took to Facebook by saying: “It amazes me that all through life, people are always telling you to be proud that you’re different, celebrate your uniqueness, yet at one of the most memorable events in your life, an administrator makes the decision to completely destroy your accomplishments. SHAME ON YOU CPHS & CHIP PETTIT!” Yet Mr. Pettit had more to deal with than the community’s ire. Soon, the House Education Committee had also heard the story.

A Letter Was Sent

An angry Facebook user commented by saying, “I sent Mr. Pettit a letter today,” the user added, “I know of people who are pulling all financial support of CPHS and their programs over this. If that were my son, I would have escorted him across the stage.” But what was it that Mr. Pettit said about this? Well, according to Mr. Pettit, Jacob had been warned.

He Was Warned

Mr. Pettit had told him that he would not be allowed to wear his uniform to the ceremony when Jacob participated in his Crown Point High School senior class graduation rehearsal earlier that day. And, to the horror of Jacob, the principal had been true to his word. So, when he arrived in his uniform at his graduation ceremony, his name was knocked off the program. But, in the midst of an enormous amount of reaction, does Mr. Pettit regret that?

His Statement

While online, Mr. Pettit has earned a lot of hatred, he maintains that he just followed school policy and stands by what he did. Instead, Jacob should have worn a military stole or cord over a gown and been remembered during the graduation ceremony, he claimed. “This tradition is not intended to be disrespectful to students, parents, or our community, but as a source of pride for our students,” Mr. Pettit told NBC Chicago. Regardless of his statement, there was no way of changing the public’s opinions of him.

Adding Salt To The Wound

Another school in the Crown Point area named Hobart High School had a similar case that was also widely reported to add salt to the wound but for a slightly different reason. In the Marine Corps, a graduate named Ana Kritikos had also enlisted and, like Jacob, she had graduated early so she could enlist. And during the graduation ceremonies, she was required to wear her military uniform.

She shared her wish to wear her military uniform to the high school administrators when Ana came back for her graduation ceremony. And, in direct contrast to the story of Jacob, she said she got full support from them. Ana said, “They have been absolutely amazing. It is OK with the Marines for us to wear our uniforms at high school graduation. I know the School Board, the principal, and superintendent talked about it and were in agreement that I could wear my Marine uniform.” With this in mind, why didn’t he just hold his tongue and did the same?

Acknowledging Military Graduates

Peggy Buffington, Hobart High School’s Superintendent, said, unlike Crown Point and their now wildly controversial principal, their school aims to go out of its way to honor military graduates. “We recognize audience members and future military in our graduates by having them stand. It is always a very special and patriotic moment where the audience roars with applause. This year was especially nice because Ana Kritikos graduated midterm and landed just in time for the graduation ceremony.” Peggy shared.

Peggy continued to share, “We did recognize her and the achievements she has made in the Marines, already. She is a Private 1st Class Military Occupation Specialist. She is currently serving in Virginia in their specialist class involved with intelligence and started her training in January. We are extremely proud of her accomplishments.” However, the military would not get involved with graduation dress codes, according to a spokesperson for the US Marine Corps. Major Clark Carpenter of the Marine Corps said, “The Marine Corps does not dictate what specific high schoolers can or cannot graduate in,” He continued, “That decision is up to school leadership.” But for long, it might not be up to the school leaders.

The Rules Were Challenged

When he read about Jacob being barred from his own graduation, State Rep. Mike Aylesworth was appalled. And with all the criticism the school was facing, he decided. He added some of his own, too. Mike, a Vietnam-era veteran, said. “What happened I found not appropriate. I just think people who are willing to put themselves in harm’s way should have the option to wear a uniform at graduation.” Sure enough, his comment won more than just support.

Approval Of A New Bill

For a bill mandating that school districts allow students already serving in the military to wear their dress uniform instead of the standard graduation clothing, State Rep. Mike Aylesworth won committee approval. Mike stated, “It’s a hodgepodge of local school board regulations all over the state,” He continued, “I just want to make it consistent all over the state.”

Mike, said this as he referred to Mr. Pettit and Crown Point High School. “Most school corporations in the state do the right thing and don’t need a law for guidance, but there’s evidently a couple of school corporations that need help,” Mike continued, “We should be encouraging young people who want to put their life on the line for our country to go through graduation and walk up on the stage in their uniform.”

Jacob’s Comment

Jacob’s father, Wheeler Stanley, declined to comment on the school incident, but he did say he would support legislation to introduce a uniform standard across the state.  He said, “I would support it wholeheartedly.” So, what did Jacob say? Jacob said, “I don’t want the social media controversy that is drawing attention away from the Class of 2017. I also do not want to make any additional statements and wish to put this all behind me so I can start my career in the Marine Corps.” Now wait until you see this next interesting story…

Better Not To Know

She didn’t elaborate on why she refused to serve him. He had waited 45 minutes in line to be treated in this manner. As a result, he wasn’t used to people refusing to follow his instructions or being scorned. She didn’t seem to realize who he was or how powerful he was at first, but it was undeniable. When she found out, the speaker was anticipating her reaction.

A Much Needed Day Off

It was a day off for Alexandria, Karl Baker, a male veteran, that VA had initiated. He is ready to take a break after several 12-hour shifts and enjoy a relaxing vacation. He’d already completed the planning for his trip. He was about to sleep in, eat out, go sightseeing, and end the day with only a drink in his hand. However, things are not going as well as planned.

A Much Needed Day Off

A Much Needed Day Off

Lunch Time

Baker woke up to his dog jumping on his bed, the sun shining through his curtains, and time to eat. He got dressed, made himself a cup of coffee, and thought about where to have a nice brunch treat. He put his plan into action and started walking to a restaurant he’d never been to before. That was one choice he dreaded the next day.

Joining The Line

They began to regard him as a completely despicable person. For a long time, Baker has been shunned by the general public. He managed to keep his chosen profession hidden from his coworkers, but only a few people knew who he truly was. Baker approached the cashier through the door. While waiting in line, his hunger grew, and he was barely aware of the crowd around him.

Bad Choice

His frequent meals had been reduced to two. On the other hand, Baker was fantastic in some ways, as he was well-known for being a picky eater. He was very particular about what he ate, so he was confident that his efforts would bear fruit when he chose a meal. A 45-minute wait, he reasoned, would be enough to justify standing in line. He was way off the mark.

Waiting For A Long Time

Baker was a patient and dedicated person, even if he had to wait a long time to make a purchase. However, this description of that trait is far too long, and it should be done sooner rather than later. Baker was starving and eager to buy food when he finally made it to the cash register. The defeat that followed, on the other hand, would have broken him.

Not A Good Day

Baker was greeted warmly by the cashier, who responded with a frustrated and impatient expression on his face. As if she hadn’t had a good day, she was chewing gum. Nonetheless, he smiled as he placed his orders. Baker was always looking for ways to make people happy, so he realized that not everything in life is rainbows and smiles. It does not, however, apply to this employee.

Not Available

Baker placed an order for food after learning that it would be impossible to prepare it. He was dissatisfied, but he realized he had other options. He was unable to use his alternate option, which he eventually informed the cashier off. He glanced at the list and finally requested the last item on it to complete the list. She continued with her previous response, rolling her eyes.

Poor Attitude

This irritated Baker. He was simply wasting far too much time queuing for the food offered at today’s discounted prices. He wouldn’t have had to wait in line if he had known they weren’t available. Her obstinacy aggravated the situation. He also took a breather from his rage and began to wonder if there was anything else on the list that wasn’t necessary.

He was met with a disapproving glare from her once more as if she telepathically thought that perhaps his question was stupid. Her behavior was extremely irresponsible, in addition to their deceptive advertising. He had a lot of things to say. On the other hand, he was able to sense her thoughts as if they were his own. She growled, “Listen, mister, if you’re not going to order, you need to leave.”

Making A Scene

Baker exclaimed, “That’s it!” “Can I speak to your manager?” he asked calmly as he remained seated. She walked from behind the counter to one side and yelled at someone in the back of the kitchen without saying anything. She returned Baker’s blank stare, and a female appeared to answer his call. She looks Baker in the eyes and says, “What’s the problem here, sir? You’re holding up the people behind you.”

The Manager

Baker figured out what was causing the employee’s bad behavior. He recognizes that this is not going to be something he enjoys at all. He took great offense at the accusation that he was the cause of such ludicrous lines. He patiently explained what had actually happened and how the problem he saw in his institution needed to be resolved by management. Her remark was, to say the least, unexpected.

Then a female cook approached the register to tell the manager, “You better pull me off the line because I’m not serving him,” referring to Baker. Even after Baker’s expectations, she flatly refused to follow Baker’s advice.“I understand that things didn’t go your way today, sir, but that’s life. Now, if you could kindly remove yourself from my establishment. I don’t serve men like you,” she scoffed. “Men like me?” Baker responded. What did she mean when she said, ‘men like him?

Baker is drained. He wouldn’t have been quite so nice now. He tried to speak with more authority in his conversation with her and assured her that he wasn’t trying to harm her. Now he’s interrogating her to clarify what she meant by “men like him,” but what she says next will lead to a clear understanding of retaliation in his mind.

Don’t Look Down On Me

Her demeanor struck me as both cold and arrogant. “I don’t need to explain what I meant to anyone. Get on out now before you cause a scene,” she begged. He was accustomed to people obeying orders but not to those who disobeyed them. When others looked down on him, he was offended.

She had no idea who he was or what power he possessed. It was obvious that she was apprehensive. He could tell how people felt about him even when he wasn’t wearing his uniform. This method was found to be effective. Baker realized he wouldn’t be treated like a senior citizen. As bystanders began to notice, he felt mistreated.

The Audacity

He began to look around at the few ears and eyes that were paying him interest. As he came to realize, in the restaurant, almost everyone was staring at him, his face turning red. They would certainly not even assume that, if they did, a restaurant would have the audacity to address him like this.

Baker chose to leave the restaurant without saying anything else. He was disappointed, angry, and embarrassed by their actions, which he could not let go unpunished. What will their reaction be then?

Baker decided to stop at the restaurant on his way back from some call-outs in the area. He parked his cruiser and pushed his way through the doorways, lucky to have found the parking lot. The manager requested that the formalities for dumping be completed.

Where’s The Manager?

The cashier made a shaky appeal to the manager. As a result, she began to walk to the kitchen’s back door at that point and screamed. She appeared to be more conscious of her demeanor now. Baker stood with one hand on his waist belt and the other on a radio device. He was cast in the role for obvious reasons. He waited for her to arrive, especially as his radio call bleeped with officer notifications.

However, another manager was on the job at the time. Baker’s attempt to tell her something upset her, and she apologized right away. She also promised to publish an internal review of her co-worker’s actions. After bystanders who were present reported the officer’s mismanagement, the story made it to social networking sites for a brief time. Now was the time for the restaurant to make a statement.

They Did Not Deny

On being asked more about the officer’s disturbing treatment, a restaurant representative did not try to deny the allegations. An angry reader wrote, “I don’t know why the offended officer doesn’t sue for $150,000. This is NO DIFFERENT than the Oregon bakery’s refusing to make a wedding cake for a gay couple. “We have made efforts to reach out to the police officer involved but have not yet spoken with him. An enraged reader stated, “I don’t know why the offended officer doesn’t sue for $150,000. This is an awful behavior that can easily be considered a breach of customer rights.” At once, another took a more principle-based view. “If I were a cop, I’d be way less concerned about these people who are openly anti-police than I would about someone quietly harboring resentment and handling my food.”

Good Relationship

Even though Alexandria Police Union Representative Pete Feltham praised the restaurant for its quick response and coordination, the damage had already been done when the restaurant rushed outside to place banners to assist law enforcement officers. Instead of exacerbating the conflict, he disconnected and thought Baker “handled the situation perfectly.” He was still surprised that such an incident occurred in Alexandria because police officers are known for their friendly interactions with residents and local businesses.

No Turning Back

None of Feltham’s statements helped to calm the public’s anger. Thousands of comments were left on the restaurant’s Facebook page, grumpily informing them that they were completely boycotted and encouraging other customers to do the same. Following the incident, there was even discussion on social media about stealing from the restaurant. Baker, on the other hand, chose to keep his stance on this matter simple.

Two Wrongs Do Not Make A Right

Thus, he stated that he is not in favor of ‘canceling culture’ and does not want to see criminal activity occur in the restaurant. He also warns against attempting to dissuade the establishment from supporting it. “Take the high road!” he said. “The actions of a few do not equate to the actions of many.” As a result, two wrongs do not equal a right.

In response to the huge amount of critique, the restaurant concentrated its efforts on its promise. According to the Washington Post, a few weeks later, they made an official statement. “In a statement, the company said that ‘the views and actions of these individuals were ‘inexcusable’ and did not reflect those of the company or the rest of the staff at the Duke Street location,” the source said.

Going Out Of Their Way

Baker was tracked down by the night manager and the restaurant to apologize for his and the three staff members’ bad behavior, and they plan to go out of their way to explain to anyone who will listen that they support law enforcement. The mayor of Alexandria, Allison Silberberg, was in a similar situation. She said she was appreciative of the company’s “full-throated apology for this unfortunate situation.” But how would it affect other law enforcement officers?

When they sat down, their gestures began to change. Brittany could tell it was going to be difficult right away. This wasn’t, reasonably enough, a Michelin star diner.  The food, on the other hand, is great.
