A deputy at the local sheriff’s office had been off work for a couple of days. Upon returning, it was time for him to take out the patrol car once more. After doing so, he saw that he needed to fix the passenger’s side headlight. It looked like it had gone out when he was gone! He decided to bring it to the shop to fix it up.

Conservators Of Peace

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, also called MCSO, is a law enforcement department in the state of Illinois. The division is run by more than 400 people. On the website, you will see that the MCSO refers to itself as “conservators of the peace.”

Back At Work!

A lot of officers have different anecdotes about what it was like to perform their duties. However, this is an officer who had a unique story to tell his family and friends. As a matter of fact, it is not a stretch to call it one of the most incredible things he had ever experienced in life. Trust us, there is no way he could have seen this coming.

Back At Work!

A Broken Bulb

The unnamed deputy decided to take a break from working. After some time away, he returned to serve and protect the community. On his first day back, he felt blessed to enjoy such a lovely day. When he performed a close inspection of his car, however, he soon realized that it was not fit for patrol duty.

A Broken Bulb

Chewed Wires

It was not the biggest issue in the world, but it was still important to take it to the mechanic. The deputy had a pretty good day, all things considered. Despite this, it did not prove to a regular trip to the mechanic. After bringing the patrol car to the auto shop, he asked the people working there to repair and maintain the broken headlight on the passenger’s side of the patrol car.

Chewed Wires

It Might Be The Rodents

He assumed that it was a simple problem. The light bulb was probably just defective, so he thought that it was going to be fixed soon. However, he was shocked when he found out the real cause of the problem. He only found out about this after he left and the mechanic started to work on the headlight.

It Might Be The Rodents

A Clue!

Soon enough, the mechanic noticed that there was something strange about the part. If anyone was going to notice something weird about a car, it would be the mechanic. However, it was not like anything that he had ever encountered in the past. What could be the real problem here?

A Clue!

A Surprise Of His Career

On June 23, 2017, Deputy Sandra Rogers, who is part of the MCSO, informed the reporters about what the mechanic found out. She explained, “The mechanic began replacing the headlight and noticed that the wire had been chewed.” How strange!

A Surprise Of His Career

Raced Back To The Mechanic

There were plenty of things that could have possibly led to this situation. Among other things, rodents were considered prime suspects. These tiny animals would have no problems getting inside the car if it was not in use. After that, the only thing they need to do would be to masticate all the wires that they could see.

Raced Back To The Mechanic

Piles Of Leaves

Sadly, these pesky little animals could do a lot of damage. As you can imagine, this was definitely not ideal at all. At any rate, there were plenty of other possibilities behind what happened. However, the mechanic did not pause to think much of it and continued to work on repairing the headlight instead.

Piles Of Leaves

A First For Their Shop

However, he soon noticed that there was something weird going on inside the object. After inspecting the wiring damage some more, he saw a sight that blew him away. Deputy Rogers explained, “He started to fix the wiring when he saw a whole bunch of leaves.” What on earth was going on? Why would something like that be in there?

A First For Their Shop

Lovely Baby Squirrels

This only confirmed the theory that the mechanic had. He believed that this only verified the thought that rodents were the perpetrators. After following where the leaves went, he saw the main source of this issue. The cop went back to his job as the mechanic tried to fix up the headlight of his car. He had no idea that he would need to go there sooner than he expected…

Lovely Baby Squirrels

A Decent Act

The mechanic had been under the impression that this was not going to be a special job. After all, he could usually fix a headlight using standard procedures. This deputy did not have a clue about the secret his car had been hiding either. He only found out when the mechanic gave him a call!

A Decent Act

A Wrong Decision

He could tell that something did not go according to plan. The repair was not as smooth as he thought it would be. But why? The mechanic hit up the office and said that the police officer had to go back to the shop. After all, there was no way he could explain the problem in a phone conversation! It was better to meet in person.

A Wrong Decision

Here Comes Mommy!

The deputy was intrigued and borrowed a different vehicle to go back to the shop. When he got there, the mechanic did not just tell him what he found but also showed the cop! What was the unbelievable thing that he found inside this car anyway?

Here Comes Mommy!

Coming Back

This was not what the deputy sheriff expected to hear at all. He thought that his worst nightmare would come true, which would mean total repair of his car. The mechanic then took him to the car and showed the police officer a pile of leaves.

Saving Her Babies

After taking a closer look at it, the police officer found an extraordinary thing. Rogers explained that “Inside the nest of leaves were four baby squirrels.” Even though he had been working in the industry for a long time, this was a first for the mechanic.

Saving Her Babies

A Typical Case

The deputy officer could not believe what he was looking at. The mother squirrel must have squeezed her way there and left her babies behind! The four baby squirrels definitely made for a beautiful but shocking find. Not once had the mechanic ever seen anything quite like this.

A Typical Case

Make Your Car Less Attractive

The mechanic did not want the animals to get hurt. He decided to take out the wheel of the car in order to remove the nest. It is nice to hear that the baby squirrels did not even wake up as he took them out of the car!

Follow His Footsteps

“They were all in perfect condition and sleeping soundly when they were removed by the mechanics,” explained Deputy Rogers. But what were they going to do with the baby squirrels? Where were they going to put these babies now?

Follow His Footsteps

Empathy

Apparently, it meant that he was going to be responsible for the animals. Rogers narrated, “It was really cute because their eyes were still closed, and they were all tucked in a circle.” After they extracted the squirrels from the vehicle, the police officer decided that he would bring the animals with him!

Empathy

Reuniting

He did not really plan to look after the animals. However, he did want to reunite the poor creatures with their mother. The police officer tried to do this by placing the adorable nest of squirrels in a box. He left them in the exact same spot where the car had been parked before the car was taken to the mechanic.

Keeping Warm

The squirrels were left in a cardboard box lying on the ground. The deputy also made sure that there was a hot water bottle in there to keep them warm. He hoped that this would be enough to keep them safe as they waited for the mother to return.

Getting Worried

The police waited for an hour, but he was starting to wonder if this was the wrong decision. After all, the mother was nowhere in sight. After waiting for a couple more hours, the mother finally returned! She first observed the cardboard box that he put the nest of squirrels in.

The mother could not resist her babies when the little ones started to cry out of hunger. She looked at the box and grabbed one of the children by the neck to separate it from the others. However, she did not return after she ran away!

Going Home

The deputy officer was patient as he waited for this mother squirrel to return. He even said, “I believe once she’d picked the first one up and knew the other was safe in the box, she waited until it got dark to get the rest as she must not have felt safe moving them in daylight.”

That Night

He felt sure that she was going to come back for the babies as soon as it started to get dark. And true enough, she did return for them! She took them one by one. Before this happened, the cop thought that he contaminated the nest by touching it. This could have made the mother abandon the babies.

It was a good thing that his fear did not come true. The squirrel mother returned to the babies, took them one by one, and brought them all to a new home. The police officer just hoped that she picked a safer place this time around.

The Real Question

The police officer could not help but wonder why she decided to put the babies in the car. Mind you, this is not a strange occurrence with squirrels. They like to make nests inside vehicles since they usually have areas that are warm enough for the babies.

A Cozy Place

Here is a great explanation courtesy of an online source: “They’re attracted by the warmth of the engine, which creates a cozy place for them to nestle. Squirrels create a fine mess once they bring in nuts, acorns, and nesting materials.”

Damage

As you can imagine, this can result in damage and issues. The Canadian Wildlife Federation claimed that this was a common issue, even more so if you live in rural areas. One of the suggestions to prevent these incidents would be to leave the car hood open. This way, the car would be cooler and less attractive to the animals.

Prevention

If the engine was cool, squirrels would not think that it is a good idea to build a nest there. Aside from that, it is also possible to put taste deterrents on the wires to stop them from biting electrical circuits. You should use apple spray if you want to do this because it does not pose any harm to these creatures.

Mechanic’s Advice

It is highly advisable to talk to a veterinarian or a mechanic about their advice on how to keep squirrels away. By following their expert advice, you can prevent damaging your properties and cars. After all, none of us enjoy dropping by the auto shop and paying a huge sum of money for repairs!

A Good Example

It is a good idea to follow in the footsteps of the police officer from the McHenry County Sherriff’s Office. Even though squirrels can be troublesome creatures, he still prioritized life above all else. He also showed us what civilians and police officers should do if they ever find themselves in this situation.

A happy ending was achieved by the concern that the cop and mechanic showed for other living things. We do not want to imagine what would have happened if the mother did not come back for the baby. In the end, all was good thanks to the kindness of the deputy.

Bitter Spray

If you ever find yourself having trouble with squirrels in the car, the Canadian Wildlife Federation said that bitter apple spray is going to do the trick. It said, “It’s rumored that squirrels don’t like the smell of peppermint or curry powder,”

However, you should still be careful if you chose to use this method. It can be dangerous! The CWF said, “Be careful with peppermint around your pets and small children, as it could be harmful to them.”

Using Smell

You can also use the smell of a predator if you want to ward off squirrels. CWF said that you can sprinkle pet hair or leave an open bag of soiled kitty litter in the car. This should scare them away!

Intimidating

“The squirrel will likely feel intimidated by the smell,” explained the CWF. The most important thing for you to keep in mind is that you should not damage the car no matter what you use. Only use items that will not damage it. You are trying to prevent damaging the car, not ruin it in other ways.

You should also follow what the MCSO said. We agree that it is sad that so many people view squirrels as pests and nothing more. However, this is not something the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office will agree with!
