Found It!

It was he who had uncovered it, so, in his perspective, he was entitled to the first opening of the hatch. The lid came off, revealing the long-forgotten contents, and metal screeched on metal. Everyone gathered in a circle, shaking their heads in bewilderment. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, someone grabbed him and yanked him away.

Wandering The Forest

Kaspar took a look at the path on the left, then the path on the right. One was well-used and well-liked by hikers. The other, which he preferred, could hardly be described as a path at all. It was finally time to venture into the Estonian marsh. The sky was pierced by the lush green trees. Lake Kurtna Matasjarv developed soon after.

Odd Markings

He found odd marks on the uneven ground as he walked around the spongy border. They might have been covered with years of vegetation, but they weren’t like any other shape he’d seen in his numerous travels. With his boot, he nudged it. Then he noticed something else.

There Was A Rope

A rope? Was there a boat that had sunk? He scraped the muck away and tried to pull it out, but it wouldn’t move. It was a weird situation, but he knew he had to inform someone. He dashed back to his house and dragged his befuddled parents out. It wasn’t long before word reached the rest of the community, and a large throng assembled.

The men gathered to see if they could uncover any clues as to what had sunk to the bottom of the lake. The rope, which was partially buried in the muck, was discovered by one of them. He uncovered it with his hands till he was able to grasp it, and then he yanked hard. The damp mud quickly gave way, yet it refused to budge. Then they all attempted to pull.

The Authorities Were Called

There were more than a dozen powerful men and women on the other end, but whatever was on the other end wouldn’t come up without a fight. They yanked and yanked, but it was in vain. They lacked the necessary tools and manpower to solve the puzzle. It was past time to contact the cops.

Help Is Here

The thunderous rumble of a massive bulldozer soon rumbled throughout the woodland. They had finally received the assistance they required. They secured the rope to the massive machine as the driver prepared to pull it forward. Several people also offered to help with the load by holding some pieces of the rope. Even with the extra horsepower, however, it wasn’t enough. It had to be big, whatever it was.

It Took Hours

Everyone dashed home to get their own ropes and drive in their respective cars. Steel cables, shovels, machine power, and muscle – even little Kaspar contributed a helping hand – it took 8 hours. He, like everyone else, was desperate to see what his discovery was and was willing to put in as many hours as it took.

Metal Came Up

As they all pulled together, they suddenly felt something move. The tip of something rose to the surface of the water a few minutes later. People tried to extricate it from the muck, digging soil from around it using shovels to make it easier for the bulldozer to pull it out. Finally, the mystery “object” was revealed.

An Open Hatch

Everyone gasped as the beast slowly rolled up and out of the water like an algae-covered monster as the sun began to set behind the treeline. Some witnesses recognized it immediately and hurried to scrape and hose off the hardened dirt on its surface, revealing a massive gaping hatch.

One Last Pull

They’d been half hauling the enormous metal object out of the filthy water for hours. The guys wiped the sweat from their forehead and continued to scrape away the layers of muck, revealing an oddly familiar white symbol, even as their vitality dwindled. They’d gone this far because their curiosity had driven them. They were now preparing for the final pull.

It was finally out with one more strong pull. As they watched the metal monster roll-out of the lake, squelching and fighting the heavy mud and showering torrents of water over the locals, everyone became silent. None of them could believe they had resurrected a piece of history… but what was a war tank doing here?

Everyone’s focus was on that question. What was a WWII battleship doing in an Estonian swamp lake… Is it true that you’re in the midst of nowhere? Kaspar dashed up the stairs to take a look inside. He would not miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He noticed something gleaming through the water. “Mom? Are those big bullets? ” The kid asked.

Don’t Go Near!

Kaspar was yanked off his feet and dragged away by powerful arms. “Get away from that!” screamed his mother. The ammunition was still strewn throughout the cabin. Because the tank was in such good shape, there was a risk that the shells could still be hazardous. The sound of sirens didn’t take long to reach them.

The Army Showed Up

Men in battle gear and a camouflaged truck poured out of the armored vehicles and towards the mud-caked tank. As soon as they realized what was inside, someone had to notify the cops. Everyone was completely still and silent as if they were in danger. Kaspar was approached by one of the officers.

“You found it?” enquired the enormous guy. A faint, terrified nod was given by the kid. The gentleman grinned and said, “I’m impressed, well done.” “We need you to step back while we make sure it’s safe,” the soldier stated, looking around at the villagers. And, between the army and online research, the answers to the puzzle eventually emerged.

It took two weeks and every available hand to completely remove the tank from the lake. The team was able to get the massive machine far enough up the bank for visitors to go around and have a closer look. Many people took pictures of and with the significant historical find. But how did a Russian-made tank with German markings wind up there in the first place?

Underwater For A Long Time

Experts determined that it was really a combat machine, a T34/76A constructed by the Soviet Union. In the war against the Germans, the Soviet army relied heavily on this 7-metric-ton truck. They discovered another surprising information regarding the symbols and numbers painted on its side, in addition to the fact that it had been submerged for 56 years.

A Makeover

The enemy was believed to have taken this tank and repainted it with their own emblems. The predominant assumption is that the Germans dumped it so it couldn’t be retaken, although it was a sophisticated vehicle capable of navigating all types of situations. The Gorodenko museum was the site of the next incredible milestone.

Another intriguing feature of the tank was that it appeared to be completely damage-free. While part of the metal on the surface had corroded slightly due to decades of submersion, the Russian war machine appeared to be in good working order. In fact, it was so well-kept and appeared to be in good working order that they couldn’t help but hope it still worked.

How It Maintained Its Condition

The tank’s perfect state was attributed to low oxygen levels in the marshy bog area that became its watery tomb, according to experts. These circumstances helped to keep the metal in good condition while reducing corrosion. Everything was still in working order as if the metallic monster had sunk a year ago. Was it, however, still operational?

During the restoration, experts were astounded to discover that the old diesel engine could be started without the need for any spare parts. A total of 116 rounds of ammo were also discovered. Experts were even able to provide a solution to the burning question of why the tank was placed in that specific location…

Tanks and men rushed into the tight, swampy area as the battle forces relocated. The conflict came to a close on August 3rd. Massive amounts of Soviet armor and artillery bombarded German lines, but little changed until August 10.

A ‘Trophy Tank’

During the Battle of the Blue Mountains in the summer of 1944, German troops captured the Soviet ‘Trophy Tank.’ The fact that this tank served on both the Russian and German sides during WWII makes it exceptionally unusual. Sadly, it was buried in its watery burial only six weeks later.

Retreating

The Germans began retreating along the Narva front line on September 19, 1944, and purposely dumped the tank. The German soldiers refused to accept anything and destroyed anything they couldn’t utilize. The vintage T-34 is currently on display in a Gorodenko village war museum for all to see — a precious treasure discovered by a curious young boy!
